Writing is an essential skill for individuals with Rett Syndrome if we hope for them to become totally independent communicators. But writing is often challenging for many reasons for those that cannot hold a pencil or operate a computer independently. This course will lay out the essential foundations for writing. These foundational skills are often bypassed for individuals with Rett Syndrome as being too hard or impossible to achieve. Robust videos will example each foundational skill that neuro-typical children easily gain, but our kiddos need to have carefully engineered and made accessible for them to be successful. How to begin teaching the act of writing and the tools to use will be explained and modeled in video. These tools are readily available on the Rett-U website and will make writing not only possible but fun! Experience has taught me that individuals with Rett Syndrome love to write – let’s get them started!

Registration includes unlimited access to this course for one year. To purchase, click below to enter our webinar catalog. Log in or create a new account on the next screen.

Happy Friday! We have a heart melting story to share with you all! Meet Savannah! She recently got a puppy and this sweet dog needed a name. Savannah's family got the flip books out and Savannah spelled b-e-a-r using her flip book and no prompting at all. We love seeing the flip book changing lives and giving those who are non-verbal a voice. ... See MoreSee Less

Rett U & Tobii Dynavox - Birmingham, Alabama

October 13, 2017, 8:00am - October 13, 2017, 4:30pm

Join us for a day focused on real-world, hands-on practice with communication skills, strategies and the academic areas of reading and writing for students with complex needs. This full-day workshop will begin with ensuring communication access is woven throughout everyday activities while modeling and practicing with partners using Rett University’s 4-Grid Communication Book and Tobii Dynavox’s SonoPrimo, soft-tech language grids. Later in the day, we will address the academic skills of reading and writing for students with complex needs that are often thought to be impossible for individuals with Rett Syndrome and other complex disabilities. The strategies and techniques that have been developed and used with students worldwide are proven to get students actively participating in reading and writing. Techniques for reading to and with kiddos while modeling communication will be demonstrated in videos and then put into practice during the workshop. Participants will actively use ABC and Core Word Communication Flipbooks to build a short story with a partner, focusing on understanding and improving upon the interaction needed to cultivate solid communication and educational exchanges. Private 1:1 Consults with Susan Norwell available Sat, Oct 14 and Sun, Oct 15. Register at gp2c.webconnex.com/birmingham
