The 4 Block Literacy Model, as conceptualized by Jim and Patricia Cunningham and adapted and implemented by David Koppenhaver and Karen Erickson for high incidence disabilities is a model that is also easily adapted for individuals with more complex disabilities such as Rett Syndrome. An integral part of this model is the Word Study Block. The Word Study Block was designed to build decoding and encoding skills as well as efficient sight word reading. This course focuses on Patricia Cunningham’s Making Words Curriculum for decoding and encoding as well as adapted approaches to learning sight words. Embedded in both are effective strategies for assessing both aspects of this essential block that heavily influence both reading and writing for individuals with Rett Syndrome.
